Zoloft is a strong antidepressant from selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. It has the active ingredient Sertraline.
In some degree, it provides a weak influence on the reuptake of noradrenaline and dopamine. According to many medical and marketing studies, Zoloft has been regarded as one of the best antidepressants in the world.
Unlike most analogical drugs, Zoloft does not give an intense sedative, psychostimulant and anticholinergic action. There are not medical addiction during the prolonged use of the medicine and no severe side effects in the cardiovascular system.
Zoloft is one of the lightest antidepressants. The mechanism of its action consists in the increase of the level of serotonin in neurons of the brain. It quickly inhibits the symptoms of sadness and anxiety, and also lowers concern, and restores a normal sleeping.
In combination with psychological therapy, Zoloft is able to effectively arrest the symptoms of the obsessive-compulsory disorders, and inhibits any types of phobia. The therapeutic effect develops within 14 days. Due to the slow release, a high safety and a good tolerance of Sertraline is achieved.
Directions for the use
Zoloft is prescribed during high depressive episodes to arrest sadness, anxiety, fear, and hypersomnia. Zoloft is also useful for the symptomatic treatment of the social phobia, obsessive-compulsory disorder, panic disorder. It is ineffective for anxious disorder.
Usage and dosage
Each medical case needs an individual approach to the treatment. A semiology of the psychological disorder should be studies in order to specify a dosage regimen. In case of the panic disorder, the use of the low doses of Zoloft 25-50 mg per day is needed.
If symptomatic depression treatment, it is recommended to begin the use of Zoloft with the dose of 50 mg, and the dose is gradually increased up to 200 mg per day. The dose should be increased by 50 mg not more than once per week.
If the therapeutic effect is achieved in the minimal doses, the dosage regimen is not required. The lower the daily dose of Zoloft is, the less risk of the development of the side effects will be.
The increase of the dose by more than 200 mg per day will not give the intense/effective result. If the use of the maximal daily dose of Zoloft 200 mg does not give an intense antidepressive effect, it is necessary to have an additional examination and adjust the therapy.
Zoloft administration in senior people
Zoloft can be used in the same doses for senior people. However, the functions of kidneys, liver should be constantly controlled, and the level of sodium should be checked.
If senior patients have diseases of liver or kidneys, the medicine should be used in the minimal dose.
A sudden cessation of Zoloft should be avoided. If the depression symptoms are arrested, the daily dose shoyld be gradually decreased by 50 mg every 5-7 days. Only after having the minimal dose of Zoloft 50 mg per day, the administration can be stopped. If the treatment is abruptly stopped, the depression symptoms can become more intense, or severe side effects will appear.

- Severe neurological disorders
Zoloft is not prescribed in combination with MAO inhibitors. Alcohol consumption is contraindicated during the treatment because it can worsen the disease symptoms and create an additional load to the central nervous system.
